Ancient Origins<\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n

Baccarat is one of the most glamorous casino games.<\/span> So it\u2019s only fitting that its origins are shrouded in mystery and allure.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Some trace the history of baccarat back to a legend from the Etruscans, an ancient Italian people.<\/span> Legends suggest a game in which a virgin has to roll a 9-sided die to determine her fate.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

If she rolls an 8 or 9, she will become a powerful priestess. A 6 or 7 will mean that she can live, but if she rolls lower than a 6? Well\u2026 the poor girl will be banished to the sea to drown. <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

If you\u2019re not familiar with baccarat, players\u2019 hands <\/span>score between 0 and 9.<\/span> And just like the Etruscan legend, higher scores win the game.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Asian Baccarat?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Some speculate that baccarat <\/span>actually<\/span><\/i> originated in Asia, where European soldiers encountered similar games and brought them home.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Pai Gow, for example, comes from Ancient China and resembles the baccarat game we know today. Its name translates loosely to \u201cmake nine\u201d or \u201ccard nine.\u201d  <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Additionally, Macao – a gambling game whose name suggests Asian origins – is sometimes cited as a direct forerunner to baccarat due to similarities in the rules. Macao was very popular in 18th-century Europe among all classes. <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Felix Falguiere<\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

With so many theories floating around, we may never know the true history of baccarat, or whether the game came to be through a mix of factors. <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

That being said, it\u2019s widely believed that a man named Felix Falguiere created the first rules of the game in 14th-century Italy.<\/span> Falguiere even gave baccarat its name<\/span>. <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Felix spoke Italian, so he actually called it \u2018bacarra,\u2019 which means \u2018zero\u2019 (all face cards and 10\u2019s are worth zero in the game). Its popularity amongst the French nobility meant that the French version of the name, \u2018baccarat,\u2019 gained steam later on.<\/span> Eventually <\/span>baccarat spread worldwide. <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The French Connection<\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The Italian Renaissance wasn\u2019t all fun and games. <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

During the period\u2019s Italian Wars, French forces moved through the country.<\/span> As the story goes, when they got home, they had brought Baccarat with them! <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Apparently, the card game became a favorite of the 15th-century French king Charles VIII and his court.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Whichever baccarat origin story you like best, we know for sure that by the 19th century, the French aristocracy was onto a baccarat craze. The game <\/span>took place in exclusive, opulent private rooms.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Baccarat\u2019s French popularity accounts for why two of its three main variants feature French names: <\/span>Baccarat Banque<\/span><\/i>, and the later <\/span>Chemin de Fer<\/span><\/i>.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

British Baccarat: Royal Trouble, 007 and the Beatles<\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The British public became very interested in baccarat thanks to the \u2018royal baccarat scandal\u2019 (also known as the Tranby Croft affair)<\/span>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

It all began at an 1890 house party. The then Prince of Wales and future King of England, Edward VII, was invited to Tranby Croft, Yorkshire. The party included Edward\u2019s advisors, as well as his friend, Sir William Gordon-Cumming. <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The men played Baccarat, but unfortunately, Gordon-Cumming was accused of cheating. <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

In exchange for the silence of his party on the matter, Gordon-Cumming signed a document saying he would never play cards again. <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

However, the man\u2019s secret <\/span>didn’t hold for long, so he decided to bring the party\u2019s hosts to court for slander. The Prince of Wales <\/span>served as a witness in the case, and his friend was eventually found guilty. <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The whole event <\/span>played out in all its sordid glory by the media.<\/span> They even wrote articles about baccarat rules for the curious public.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Casino Royale<\/h2>\n\n\n

Baccarat also found fame across the channel when Ian Fleming\u2019s novels cited the game – specifically the <\/span>Chemin de Fer<\/span><\/i> version – as James Bond\u2019s favorite.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

In 1953, the secret agent played baccarat in Fleming\u2019s first Bond novel, <\/span>Casino Royale<\/span><\/i>.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

In fact, the novel\u2019s plot revolves around a game between Bond and his adversary, Le Chiffre, who is taken out by his Soviet bosses after Bond bankrupts him. <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Casino Royale<\/span><\/i> even included an introduction to baccarat for readers!<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

If you\u2019ve seen the 2006 film <\/span>Casino Royale<\/span><\/i>, you\u2019ll know that t<\/span>hey traded baccarat for Texas hold \u2018em poker<\/a><\/span>. This was simply because the latter was extremely popular at the time.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

If you do want to see Bond play baccarat on film, you can find it in <\/span>Dr. No<\/span><\/i>, <\/span>On Her Majesty\u2019s Secret Service<\/span><\/i>, <\/span>For Your Eyes Only, <\/span><\/i>and <\/span>GoldenEye<\/span><\/i>. However, the most detailed baccarat scene<\/span> occurs in <\/span>Thunderball <\/span><\/i>– the 1967 adaptation of <\/span>Casino Royale<\/span><\/i>. <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Further attesting to baccarat\u2019s appeal in mid-century England, The 1964 film A Hard Day\u2019s Night<\/a><\/em>, starring the Beatles, features the game.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Paul McCartney\u2019s (fictional) grandfather steals the band\u2019s invitation to a posh casino. He doesn\u2019t seem to know <\/span>how<\/span><\/em> to play baccarat.<\/span> The croupier corrects him when he yells \u201cbingo\u201d instead of \u201cbanco\u201d.<\/span> But that doesn\u2019t stop him from playing the game – and winning! <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Baccarat was too good for Europe to keep all to itself.<\/span> Soon the game moved swiftly across the ocean to South America and the Caribbean.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

In 1940s Havana, the<\/span> Punto Banco<\/span><\/i> variant <\/span>emerged, and the rest is history! <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Punto Banco<\/span><\/i> baccarat surged in popularity, and the late 1950s brought it to the Sands casino in Las Vegas. C<\/span>asinos marketed<\/span> baccarat as a glamorous game for the rich and powerful. Minimum bets were high, which successfully added to its drama and allure. <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Today, <\/span>Punto Banco<\/span><\/i> is the most popular form of the game, often labeled by casinos as simply \u201cbaccarat.\u201d<\/span> And the rest, as they say, is history.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
